In-Depth Look at glass tiles

Introduction

Glass tiles are an unconventional yet stylish flooring option that adds beauty, strength, and reflective light, making rooms appear larger and more open.

Preparation and Installation

A level subfloor is essential to prevent cracking. Install a crack suppression membrane, then apply a flexible thinset mortar. Avoid mastics and epoxies as they are less reliable over time.

Tile Placement

Use a notched trowel to apply mortar and back-butter the tiles to prevent air pockets. Carefully pound tiles into place to ensure proper adhesion and avoid noticeable voids.

Cutting and Safety

Glass tiles can be cut using a wet saw or scoring tool, though the latter requires experience. Always wear eye protection and handle cut tiles carefully due to sharp edges.

Grouting and Finishing

Allow the floor to cure for 24-48 hours before grouting. Check manufacturer recommendations, as sanded grout may not be suitable. Clean excess grout, apply a grout sealer, and finish with a final wipe-down.
